Why does window reflection burn turf?

Why does your artificial grass burn or melt?

Turf melt is becoming an increasingly common problem for homeowners. If you find your lawn melted or faded stripes, the culprit is likely that the nearby window, which is more than likely a low E window. Low-e glass is a treated glass with an energy-saving coating. Coated glass has a transparent microscopic layer of metal that reflects heat but still allows light to pass.

These windows help reduce the heat entering the house, so more and more home builders install them. However, they can also be a giant magnifying glass, melting turf, siding, and even nearby parked cars. Low E windows are double-glazed and are often slightly distorted with a concaved center. This concave effect, along with a low reflective E coating, can focus sunlight on concentrated hot spots, as seen with a magnifying glass. The temperature of these hot spots can become so high that they destroy everything they touch.

Low E windows are becoming more common for melting synthetic turf, vinyl siding, and lighting natural grass fire. One of our clients recently wrote to us that their lawn melts due to low E windows. He took the reading of hot spots that were destroying his garden and exceeded 214 degrees.

Replacing damaged artificial grass is an expensive and time-consuming process. Because artificial grass can cost between $5 and $25 per square foot (excluding labor), so protecting it is essential.

As energy efficiency requirements become increasingly more stringent, Low E windows are becoming more prevalent. With more low E windows, more people are affected by the energy reflection issues that come with them. If you see signs of damage to your lawn and your house does not have low E windows, the reason maybe your neighbor’s windows. Take note of the time of day and monitor the reflections caused by nearby windows. Keep special attention to east and west-facing windows; these are often the windows that cause this type of damage.

How to prevent turf from melting?
